President's Message
Even though the temperature outside feels more like the end of summer, our calendars say that we are well into fall and soon we will be gearing up for the holiday season!  This time of year is always a busy season for everyone...school events, conferences and holidays keep our calendars busy, but it is also a wonderful time to reflect back on the year that has flown by, give thanks for what we have, and give back to our communities.

A few weeks ago several of our OkAND members traveled to Boston for FNCE.  What an amazing time we had learning from our peers, networking, and gathering with old friends.  I was happy to see so many members visit and enjoy the reception that was hosted by OkAND, as well as Kansas State University and the Arkansas, Kansas, and Missouri affiliates. Fall in New England is beautiful, and the scenery made the trip even more perfect!  I cannot wait to see you all next year in Chicago to celebrate the Academy's 100th birthday. Save the date for FNCE 2017 in Chicago on October 21-24!

Our Winter Impact event is quickly approaching.  I appreciate all of the hard work that the committee has done to bring our members a fun conference, as well as to give us the opportunity to give back to the Oklahoma Regional Food Bank and our communities.  The morning is packed with speakers from across Oklahoma and focuses on how they are making an impact in our communities.  That afternoon we will have the opportunity to give back to the Regional Food Bank by volunteering.  Attendees will also be able to tour the facility and learn even more about how the food bank impacts our state.  We will cap the day with a reception that will be open to our members, their families and the Friends of OkAND.  I hope you all can make it for the whole day and invite your family and friends to join us that evening.  It is sure to be a fun and impactful day!

December will be here before we know it, and that means scholarship applications and nominations for our professional awards will be due soon!  Students, make sure to start working on your application before you head off for your much needed break!  Professionals, if you have someone you would like to nominate for an award, please be sure to contact us.

In the next couple of months, our President-Elect, Misti Leyva, will be recruiting members for our election's slate of candidates.  If you are interested in volunteering and serving on the OkAND board of directors, please let us know!

Our Spring Convention committee is almost complete and planning is underway.  Thank you to Abby Yeary and Melissa Church for leading this event.  Please mark your calendars and plan on attending.  Spring Convention 2017 will be held in Norman at the Embassy Suites on April 20-21.  We hope to see you there!

On behalf of our OkAND board of directors, I wish each of you a joyful holiday season shared with your family and friends.  I look forward to 2017 and all that it brings!

2016-2017 President

Delegate Report
Amanda Jones, MBA, RD/LD
OkAND Delegate

The Fall 2016 House of Delegates (HOD) Meeting was held in Boston on October 14th and 15th.  This meeting was different than past meetings because it included training for delegates.  The training session centered around learning how to use the Appreciative Inquiry process to be able to gather better information from constituents on mega issues of our profession.   As your delegate I want to be able to share with the HOD what Oklahoma RDNs and DTRs thoughts, opinions and ideas are about issues facing our profession, and this training gave me a new strategy and the tools to be better at this!

The HOD also conducted a dialogue session on wellness and prevention that included identifying opportunities for nutrition professionals in the area of wellness and prevention, identifying skills and strengths needed by practitioners, affirming and promoting the role of RDN/DTR in wellness and prevention, and engaging constituents in ongoing conversations to build strategies for wellness and prevention.  Following the meeting, I will be engaging in conversations in our state about what we want the future of wellness and prevention to look like in Oklahoma and the role of credentialed food and nutrition practitioners in this future.   More communication will be coming on this process, and I want to your ideas and dreams about the future of wellness and prevention!

Carol Banister, RD/LD, MS, CDE
Founder and President
Banister Nutrition, LLC

Banister Nutrition, LLC, located on the Mercy Campus in Oklahoma City, is celebrating it's 35th anniversary of providing medical nutrition therapy to patients from across the metro and the state of Oklahoma. Carol Banister, MS, RD/LD, CDE is president and owner of Banister Nutrition, which she started in l981.
Currently three additional dietitians are with Banister Nutrition, including Megan Kane, MS, RD/LD, CDE, Meghan Murphy VanCamp, RD/LD, and Kathi Miller, RN, RD/LD, CDE. Banister Nutrition is supported by over 160 referral physicians which allows this practice to thrive and continue to grow.
Being a dietitian in private practice in 1981 when Carol opened her office was unheard of. This venture required a leap of faith and a strong conviction to providing a quality of nutrition therapy/counseling that was not typically available in the hospital setting, along with an innate business/marketing/relational acumen that far exceeds clinical expertise.  The world of private practice looks very appealing, which it is, but only for the brave of heart. The intense tenacity and commitment required to have a successful practice over 35 years eventually feels very minimal when contrasted with the rewards of sharing with your patients their recovery from an eating disorder, decreasing medications, lab values improving, weight decreasing and developing a healthy, fit and strong lifestyle. It is a balancing act for all of the dietitians at Banister Nutrition to be on the cutting edge of their clinical knowledge and counseling/therapy skills, and to be personally committed and engaged with each patient, assuring they will be returning for long-term follow-up appointments to accomplish their clinical goals for which they were referred.  This all in addition to research and writing for our Facebook page and blog site.
Prior to opening her practice Carol received her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from Kansas State University. She taught in the College of Health at the University of Oklahoma, was Director of Clinical Nutrition at Presbyterian Hospital, taught graduate classes at the University of Central Oklahoma, was president of the Oklahoma City District Dietetic Association, and was president of the Oklahoma Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She has received the OkAND Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year Award, and Kansas State University recognized Carol as "Entrepreneur of the Year" in the College of Human Ecology where she also has recently served on the Alumni Board for a four year term.  Oklahoma Eating Disorder Association has recognized Carol as a pioneer in the treatment of eating disorders in Oklahoma.   She thrives on challenges and has been determined to succeed throughout her career. Carol commented "My career path has been a blessing I could never have imagined when I graduated from Kansas State University. The field of dietetics and certainly private practice has changed a great deal in the past 35 years, but I can truly say I love what I do today as much as I did when I opened my practice 35 years ago. Becoming a dietitian was a great decision for me."
