From Your Board of Directors
President's Message
Teresa Jackson, MS, RD, LD
2014-2015 President

As our temperatures are finally falling and we're all gearing up for the holidays, I'd like to wish everyone a Happy Autumn!

In September, we held our Fall Symposium on the campus of UCO. It was an informative day learning more about social media, making a great first impression and electronic health records. Thank you to our event chairs, Katy Soper and Emily Warnock; and the rest of their planning committee for a successful symposium! Events like these are only possible because of the volunteerism of our members.

The evening before Symposium, OkAND's Public Policy Committee hosted our first Nutrition Policy Forum at "Put a Cork In It" Winery in Bricktown. It was a fun evening of wine tasting with snacks provided by Homeland. We heard from our public policy leaders about current issues and plans for future legislation. Plans are underway to host a similar event in Tulsa for our members who weren't able to travel to OKC; look for more details to come. We hope to see you there!

Just a few weeks ago, many of our OkAND members traveled to Atlanta, GA for FNCE. It was an exciting time to gather with peers from across the nation while continuing to educate ourselves. We teamed up with several other affiliates (Arkansas, Kansas & Missouri) that have strong ties to Oklahoma to host a joint member reception. I was ecstatic with our high number of attendees; we had well over 80 attend. It was a great time of networking and fellowship with "old" friends. Thank you to our Oklahoma sponsors, Oklahoma State University and the University of Central Oklahoma!

In the next few months, our President-Elect will be recruiting members to fill our election slate of candidates. If you have interest in getting more involved with our affiliate, let us know. We are always looking for more volunteers! We have a variety of positions with a variety of job responsibilities and we always want our member talents and skills to shine.

Our Spring Convention chairs, Katie Strack and Tiffany Grant, have formed their convention committee and planning has started. This event will be held March 12-13, 2015 at the Reed Convention Center in Midwest City. Mark your calendars now; we hope you'll be able to attend one or both days!

Plans are also happening for our annual Advocacy Day held at the Capital. The day is March 26th, be on the look-out for more details. This is a wonderful opportunity to get involved with our public policy committee and support our organization as we plan to move forward with strengthening our licensure.

From all of our OkAND board of directors, I wish you and your family a happy and healthy holiday season! Thank you for allowing me to serve as your OkAND President.
Nutrition Policy Forum in OKC and Tulsa
Sharon Huey, MA, RD, CSO, LD
Public Policy Coordinator

This September your Public Policy Panel held our Inaugural Nutrition Policy Forum, a wine and informational event at Put a Cork in It in Bricktown, Oklahoma City.  All told, 21 attended this event.  The intent was to share our thoughts on various aspects of our legislation on which we are currently working.  This was also our chance to hear concerns from RDs working around the state.  Misti Levya provided a review of the political environment we are facing in Oklahoma, as we contemplate re-crafting our legislation.  She also detailed the national environment regarding legislation in other states, as well as recent meetings we have had with legislators. Our new "Adverse Event" link on the OkAND website was unveiled.  Misti highlighted the need to start reporting "harm" that we witness, situations in which we believe harm has been committed (i.e. questionable or potentially damaging advice given).  There is a detailed explanation and form on the OkAND website.  Amanda Jones also discussed the headway we are making to change legislation, to allow RDs to write diet orders in the hospital setting.  Delicious treats were provided by Homeland and the Panel provided a wine tasting of at least 7 different local wines from Oklahoma.  It was a fun event, and we look forward to hosting a similar event in the Tulsa area very soon.

OkAND Gives Canned Foods & Cash to the Food Bank
Deborah S Taylor, RDN/LD, SNS
Public Relations Chair
"Foodies". What a great word! Aren't WE the ultimate foodies? Many of us are blessed to be able to refuse a food just because we don't like what the nutrient analysis tells us. But unfortunately, not everyone has that luxury. They don't have enough food to feed their families, much less themselves. And that's where the FOOD BANK comes in. For the past few years, OkAND members have chosen to collect donations for our local food banks. At both the fall and spring conferences, we set up a table, encouraging attendees to bring staple foods or, better yet, CASH to help out the food bank. At the Fall Symposium September 12th, OkAND members contributed 16 cans of food and $382. We appreciate everyone who contributed to that donation, and we encourage all of our members to remember those who are less fortunate this holiday season.  Registered Dietitian Nutritionists help the Community Eat Right!
