News from Your Board Members

President's Message
Jennifer Parham, RD/LD

With the end of 2012 quickly approaching comes a time of reflection as well as anticipation for what the New Year will bring.  While reflecting on the many accomplishments of OkAND throughout the year I am reminded that we could not have achieved these successes without the hard work and dedication of our members, board members and countless volunteers and students across the state.  I would like to extend a special thank you to each of you for making OkAND and the Dietetics profession what it is today.

Most recently, we saw the completion of the Fall Symposium: Made in Oklahoma.  It was an astounding success thanks to the leadership of Melissa Church and Tiffany Grant along with the entire symposium committee.  During the event, canned food and monetary donations were collected from attendees to help support the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.  I am pleased to report that we exceeded our donation goal benefiting many Oklahoma families.

As we prepare to move into 2013 we anticipate the excitement of a new beginning filled with bright opportunities.  As individuals we rededicate our professional approach and resolve to learn and accomplish more each year.  As a member of OkAND your benefits are great and opportunities are endless.  Let’s take a look at just a few upcoming opportunities:

Very soon, OkAND will be accepting applications for student scholarships so encourage those you know to submit their application.  Please consider honoring a fellow dietitian by nominating him/her for a professional award.  If you have ever had a desire to serve on the board of directors consider making your nomination.  For more information regarding these opportunities please send an email request to oknutrition@oknutrition.org.

OkAND is actively planning Legislative Day at the Capital scheduled for March 6, 2013, so mark your calendars and plan to attend!  This is a unique way for dietitians to be the “face” of nutrition excellence while building rapport with law makers.  Your presence and participation will have a profound impact on the future of our profession within the state.

If you are seeking more opportunities for continuing education you will want to attend Spring Convention planned for April 11-12, 2013.  The convention will be held at the Waterford Marriott in Oklahoma City and will be filled with fabulous programs, speakers and exhibitors.  Glenna McCollum, President Elect of the Academy, will serve as keynote speaker sharing with us the vision of the Academy and how OkAND fits within that vision and plan.

On behalf OkAND I wish you all a safe and happy holiday season!  I look forward to working with you in 2013!

Greetings Academy Members!  Thank you for supporting the Academy and the Oklahoma Academy.  One of the many benefits of your membership is webinars.  Ever thought about becoming a board certified specialist?  The Oklahoma Academy was excited to host this year’s first webinar on November 13th.   It featured a panel discussion on a few certification options, including two CSSD (certified specialist in sports dietetics), Kimberly Davis and Gina Wollenberg, as well as Casey Campbell who holds the certificate in pediatric weight management and Abby Stover who hold the certificate in adult weight management.   On January 15th, the Oklahoma Academy will be hosting another webinar to feature even more certification options!  Mark your calendars for noon on January 15th to start your path to a certification that could lead to a new career pathway, increase in salary, peer recognition and much more!
