Oklahoma Tornado Disaster Assistance
A message from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

Everyone affected by the recent tornado in Oklahoma is in the thoughts and prayers of the entire Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Members are encouraged to contribute to the Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund. And the Academy offers resources for consumers and health professionals – before, during and after a disaster.

Disaster Relief Fund
Following Hurricane Katrina, the Foundation and the Commission on Dietetic Registration established a fund to aid members in need of assistance. Members can apply for Disaster Relief Fund assistance by contacting Amy Donatell at adonatell@eatright.org or 312/899-4767.

To make a contribution, contact Linda Hudson at lhudson@eatright.org or 312/899-4773; or mail a check to the Academy Foundation, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Chicago, IL, 60606-6995, and indicate “Disaster Relief” in the memo space.

Take Action to Support Food, Nutrition and Agriculture Programs TODAY!

The Senate has passed a bipartisan Farm Bill out of the Agriculture Committee, and the bill is headed to the Senate floor for debate and final vote. This critical piece of legislation determines not only what farmers grow, but what is available in the United States’ food supply. The Farm Bill addresses food insecurity through a variety of food assistance programs and provides many jobs for registered dietitian nutritionists working in community nutrition. As registered dietitian nutritionists, we are inherently entrenched in every aspect of the food supply, from what is planted to what is consumed by our fellow Americans. We are leaders in the nation’s efforts for better health, through improved nutrition, and we need to have our voices heard on this important farm and food bill. We need you to tell Congress how important these food, agriculture and nutrition programs are to you and for our country.

Would you take two minutes and send an email to your Senators using the Grassroots Manager?  The Academy's goal is to have more than 15,000 letters sent to Senators.  So far, over 2,000 letters have been sent.  Only 6 letters have been sent from Oklahoma!  Contact your Senator today!

Thank You for an Outstanding Convention!

The Oklahoma Academy's 2013 Spring Convention brought almost 300 members together for a fabulous conference!  We would like to thank our planning committee, as well as our exhibitors and donors for helping us achieve our mission to empower our members to be Oklahoma's food and nutrition leaders!  A complete list of all volunteers, companies, and organizations that participated is available on our website.

We also want to extend a special thank you to the following sponsors for their generous support of our event and of our profession.

Platinum Sponsors: Dairy Max, Midwest Dairy Council, Oklahoma Beef Council

Gold Sponsors: Abbott Nutrition, McDonald's of Oklahoma, Nestle Health Science,
Nutricia North America, Oklahoma Pork Council

Silver Sponsors: U.S. Foods

In addition, we want to thank all of our Silent Auction donors and bidders.  We raised $975.50 for the Oklahoma Academy Scholarship Fund!  Thank you very much for your support!

News from Your Board Members

President's Message
Jennifer L. Parham, RD/LD

As I write these words, I realize that my year as your President is quickly coming to an end.  That brings mixed emotions, a genuine sadness as well as a smile in remembering what all has taken place over the last 11 months.

It has been a very good year and a lot of that has to do with the interactions that I have had with each of you.  Countless emails, conference calls, board meetings, and visits at symposium and convention.  As a result, I truly cannot tell you how outstanding I think our Oklahoma affiliate is.  We have a genuine group of folks who are willing to generously give of their time and talents to make OkAND a success.  With that I say thank you to all of the board members, volunteers and members for your continued participation and volunteer efforts.  I hope you have found your involvement to be as rewarding of an experience as I have.

It has been such an honor and privilege to serve OkAND this year; I thank you for your confidence in me and the kindness and dedication you have all shown over the last year.  As I prepare to transition into the role of Immediate Past President, I welcome our incoming President, Abby Wood.  Abby has a continued vision for the future of OkAND, and I look forward to sharing in the efforts as we all work together to improve the health of Oklahomans.

Thank you for a terrific year!
