SB615 - Practice Act Update
Misti Leyva, PhD, RD/LD
Consumer Protection Coordinator

Dietitians have licensure in Oklahoma, but it is in the form of a title act, which means that it merely protects our right to call ourselves dietitians.  Our Practice Act is an amendment to our current licensure.  It will further define dietetics and the range of roles, activities, and regulations within which nutrition and dietetics practitioners perform.

Our bill, SB615, is not a law yet.  It was introduced last year during the first session of the 55th Oklahoma Legislature.  Our bill was first heard and approved by the OK Senate Health and Human Services Committee, and was then heard by the full OK Senate two times and passed the second time it was heard.  This year our bill entered the second session of the 55th Oklahoma Legislature.  The next step in the process for our bill to become a law is for it to be heard by an OK House of Representatives Committee.

Our desired outcome is to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public by defining our roles within our licensure.  We have new language in the bill that does not preclude anyone from practicing; instead it further defines and explains what dietitians do.  While this is different from our original goal of protecting the public from those who are not educated and/or qualified to give nutrition advice, this new goal will hold dietitians accountable for what we do and ensure the safety of the consumers that we serve.
The process for SB615 to become a law will be for SB615 to first achieve approval by a House committee.  Once we achieve approval from a House committee, the bill will go to the full House for a vote.
Contact your state legislators when asked (call and email them to request a yes vote on SB615).  As a constituent, you have more power than we do to convince your legislators to vote yes on this bill.
Email your questions and comments to dietitianlicense@oknutrition.org.

Member Spotlight
On January 27, 2016, OU-Tulsa School of Community Medicine PA students completed a 4-hour training on Nutrition Focused Physical Exams.  Facilitated by Dr. Marianna Wetherill, PhD, MPH, RDN/LD, of the OU-Tulsa College of Public Health, students learned best practices for the identification and diagnosis of malnutrition and physical signs of micronutrient deficiencies.  "By exposing our future health care providers early in their careers to the criteria for a malnutrition diagnosis and risk factors for deficiencies, we can improve the quality of patient outcomes through an interdisciplinary approach to care through the lens of nutrition," said Dr. Wetherill.
