From Your Board of Directors
President's Message

Teresa Jackson, MS, RD, LD

2014-2015 President

Welcome 2015! I hope the New Year has brought you continued health and happiness. We are so close to spring and warmer temps outside, I can feel it!

I had the opportunity to meet several new faces at the Tulsa Nutrition Policy Forum hosted by the Eastern District in mid-January. It was a successful event with snacks provided by Homeland and I appreciate all those who attended. We had great discussion about our Registered Dietitian Act amendment. It's an exciting time to be an RD in Oklahoma! I cannot thank our Consumer Protection Coordinator , Dr. Misti Leyva, enough for her leadership in this effort.

March will bring National Nutrition Month and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day. The theme focuses on the importance of food and nutrition encouraging everyone to "Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle". Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day will be celebrated on March 11th. This day honors the dedication of Registered Dietitian Nutritionists as the leading advocates for advancing the nutritional status of Americans and others around the world. Celebrate!

On March 12th and 13th, the OkAND Spring Convention will be held at the Reed Center in Midwest City. Our Convention Chairs, Katie Strack and Tiffany Grant, have worked countless hours alongside the rest of the Spring Convention committee members to put together a wonderful line-up of speakers. Not only will you earn valuable continuing education hours but you will have the opportunity to network with other RDs in the state. You won't want to miss this annual event! Be sure to register online now for early bird pricing.

On March 26th, the OkAND Public Policy Panel will host Advocacy Day at the State Capital. This event is important for members to attend because we will be visiting with legislators. Having a strong presence will be vital during this legislative session as we work to strengthen our licensure in the State. Our legislators need to know we are the Nutrition Experts in Oklahoma! And this is another great opportunity to become more involved with OkAND and network with your peers.

The Academy election is in progress and I encourage all of our members to vote. We will be competing against other affiliates of similar size in the Project Vote 2015 competition. Other affiliates in our category include: American Overseas, Arkansas, District of Columbia, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oregon, South Carolina, and Utah. The affiliate with the largest percentage of members voting in the Academy election wins a free registration to FNCE 2015 in Nashville, Tennessee. OkAND won this competition last year so let's REPEAT! Visit www.eatright.org/elections to cast your vote by February 22nd!

I hope to see everyone at an upcoming OkAND event this spring.  Until then, stay well!
Licensure Update
Misti J. Leyva, PhD, RD/LD
Consumer Protection Coordinator

As the Consumer Protection Coordinator (CPC) for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, I have been charged with evaluating our current Licensed Dietitian Act. As you know, our "Act", in its current state, provides protection of our title of dietitian only. This form of licensure has served us well for many years and continues to serve; however, as you are also aware, food and nutrition misinformation can have harmful effects on the health, well-being and economic status of consumers. As credentialed dietetic professionals, we are uniquely qualified to advocate for and promote science-based nutrition information to the public, function as primary nutrition educators to health professionals and actively correct food and nutrition misinformation. A heightened awareness to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public has resulted in an influx of emails and questions, from our members wanting clarification of "harm" to the consumer. General examples include persons misrepresenting themselves as nutrition experts and providing misinformation in that capacity, and person's performing the function of a Registered Dietitian without nutrition training in professional settings.

The most plausible course for bolstering consumer safety is amending our current licensure to include a practice act (scope of practice, but, the preferred term is practice act). Scope of practice in nutrition and dietetics encompasses the range of roles, activities, and regulations within which nutrition and dietetics practitioners perform.

Currently, the bill to amend our act has been filed! SB 615 was officially filed 01/22/2015, sponsored by Senator John Sparks (Norman). This is a very exciting time, but our work is only beginning. The OK Legislature convenes February 2, at that time our bill will be assigned to committee, where it will be considered for a full vote. This is a critical time, and each of us can contribute by visiting members of congress. The message they need to receive is simple:

  • a practice act is necessary to protect the public (i.e. their constituents) from harm committed by unqualified practitioners

  • the practice act is not intended for profitable purposes

  • the practice act is not intended to preclude qualified persons from practicing
