OkAND T-Shirt Design Contest

Do you want to show the world how much you love being in the field of dietetics?  Well, OkAND is offering you the chance to do that AND win a great prize!  We are hosting a T-Shirt design contest that will give you a chance to show off your artistic talent. The contest is open to anyone - we mean anyone - and it's a chance to create a dazzling  design or picture for a t-shirt that every dietitian in Oklahoma will want to wear to show off their nutritional attitude.  Take the time  and let your mind run wild with fun designs, as long as they include the Oklahoma Academy information.  We are on a mission to make the role of the people who work in the dietetics field something that everyone knows about.  And one more thing - sales of the shirt will go towards scholarships for dietetic students in the state of Oklahoma.  How cool is that?   So stop wasting time - you need to get to work.  If your design is selected, you'll win a 1-day registration to this year's Spring Convention.  A chance to bask in the adoration of fans who are desperate to get their hands on your piece of work.  What a great resume builder!

News From Your Board Members

President's Message
Abby Wood, RD, LD, CNSC
OkAND President

Happy New Year! I hope 2014 has started off great for everyone!  We have several upcoming events that I want to share with you.  On February 11th, we will be hosting our annual Advocacy Day event at the Oklahoma State Capitol.  Senator John Ford will be our featured guest speaker and will talk to us about building relationships between legislators and constituents.  The public policy committee has also put together a presentation to teach our members about the basics of public policy and the ABCs of meeting with your legislators. Following these sessions, we will disperse to visit our legislators.  This is our chance to let them know that we make a positive difference in the health of Oklahoma.  There is strength in numbers, and we need your help spreading the word that we are Oklahoma’s Nutrition Experts!  Please join us if you can.

The Spring Convention will be held April 3-4th in Tulsa at the Doubletree Hotel by Hilton Tulsa Warren Place.  Our theme this year is “Today’s Nutrition, Tomorrow’s Opportunities” and promises a program with a range of topics that we hope has something of interest for everyone. Registration is opening soon with early-bird registration and discounted hotel room rates available for a limited time. Register early and save!

Project Vote is back for 2014, so please take an opportunity to cast your vote for Academy officers at www.eatright.org/elections.  Last year we had 20% of our membership vote which was up from 12% the previous year.  We are competing against 11 other affiliates with similar membership levels to see who has the highest voter turnout. Let’s increase our participation this year, because the affiliate with the highest percentage of voters will receive a free registration to FNCE® 2014 in Atlanta, Georgia! This is something we can offer to a member-at-large.  We will also open up the OkAND Board of Director’s election later this month, so be on the lookout for information about that too. Remember it is your privilege and responsibility as an Academy member to choose the people you want to represent you and lead the profession.  Every Vote Counts!

Finally, I want to congratulate Amber Brown MPH, RD for winning the OKAND Scholarship to attend the Public Policy Workshop in March.  She will join several other Public Policy Panel members to represent OKAND in Washington D.C. and will report back on her experience in the May Newsletter.

The Oklahoma Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has gotten off to a great start in 2014, and I hope to see you at many of the upcoming events!

Public Policy Update
Misti Leyva, PhD, RD/LD
OkAND Consumer Protection Coordinator

In keeping with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ legislative priorities, they hosted and sponsored the first Consumer Protection and Licensure Summit just prior to FNCE in October, 2013. The goal of this priority is the protection of the public through licensure. One licensure leader per affiliate traveled to Houston, Texas, for training on critical licensure topics impacting the profession.  The Summit provided an opportunity to hear from experienced speakers on issues such as reporting harm, the Affiliate Board Role with licensure and licensure messaging.  The Academy also introduced the role of a new state position at the Summit, The Consumer Protection Coordinator. Representing the state of Oklahoma was Misti Leyva, Ph.D., RD/LD. who will also be assuming the role of CPC in Oklahoma, while exploring the possible expansion of licensure. The Summit provided a networking opportunity and vital resources from around the country available to Oklahoma in this pursuit.

If you have questions or would like additional information, please contact Misti-Leyva@ouhsc.edu.
