Ordering Therapeutic Diets in Oklahoma Hospitals

The centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) expects this new rule to improve the efficiency and efficacy of nutrition care and save up to $459 million in annual hospital costs.  Although the final rule became effective July 11, 2014, implementing it in each state in various hospital facilities is a process that will take time.  Currently, hospital regulations from the Oklahoma State Department of Health do not allow dietitians to write orders.

From Your Board of Directors

President's Message

Teresa Jackson, MS, RD, LD

2014-2015 President

Greetings Nutrition Friends!

First of all, I'd like to say thank you for allowing me to serve as your OkAND President 2014-2015. It is truly an honor and I hope to serve you well. I learned so much during my President-Elect year by getting to interact with our past board of directors, past president and members to our student volunteers and future RDs. I cannot thank everyone enough for helping me to be a stronger leader!

As President, my primary responsibility is to help guide our board of directors to carry out the goals and objectives set forth in our strategic plan. Our board of directors met in late June and worked diligently on determining where we want our organization to go during the next year. Our student association advisor also met with a few members of the student organization board to make plans for their year.

I'm excited to announce that we will be working to update our website. Thank you to all those who completed our website survey, your input is so valuable; we appreciate your time! The results will be used to make the website more appealing, efficient and helpful to our members; as well as, a resource so that others recognize us as the nutrition experts that we are.

Our public policy team is working to plan a "Nutrition Policy Forum" event prior to our Fall Symposium in September. Be on the look-out for additional details. Our public relations team will work to strengthen our presence on social media sights and increase our organization's visibility. The member services team is busy planning webinars to provide CEU opportunities for members.

And finally, I'd like to give everyone the opportunity to get involved with OkAND. We are always looking for more volunteers in a variety of roles; I'm confident that we could find a good fit for each of our skill sets, experiences and talents. If you'd like to volunteer, or if you have questions, concerns or ideas for OkAND, please contact myself at president@oknutrition.org or our Executive Director, Heather Engelman at oknutrition@oknutrition.org. I look forward to hearing from you and making this a successful year!

Delegate Report

Amanda Jones, MBA, RD/LD

2013-2016 Delegate

Oklahoma Academy members, I am honored to serve again this year as the Delegate for Oklahoma on the House of Delegates. The House of Delegates, as the voice of members, governs the profession and develops policy on major professional issues. To do this, the House of Delegates meets twice a year to discuss a mega issue or a topic that will influence the future of dietetics. At these meeting the delegates share insight from their constituents to help fully discuss all perspectives of the issue and identify key items to be addressed. I am proud to represent Oklahoma and serve as your voice. I want to be able to represent Oklahoma well, and to this, I need to hear from you. A Fact Sheet about the upcoming mega issue being addressed at the fall meeting has been posted to the website.

Please provide your responses to the following question:

What is the value of business and management skills in your practice area?

Submit your answers to me at delegate@oknutrition.org by September 30, 2014. Your feedback will be shared with the House of Delegates in advance of the Fall HOD Meeting. Your input will be very helpful to the dialogue session!

I challenge all members to be involved in guiding our profession. Change is happening in healthcare and in the field of dietetics. Don't be silent and let others make changes to the way you practice, be part of the process. Be informed of the issues facing our field, form an opinion and then voice your opinion, be part of the change! I WANT to hear from you!
