Free Webinar - What's Going on with the School Meal Program?

Start the new school year right!  Understand the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act! (HHFKA)  Confused?  That’s what Congress calls the reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Programs in 2010.  As Registered Dietitians, we need to keep up with federally funded nutrition programs.  This webinar will evaluate how the HHFKA is working a year after it went into effect.  You’ll leave with a frank discussion the changes in School Lunch & Breakfast in Oklahoma.  This webinar is NOT geared for School Nutrition professionals.  Registered Dietitians & Diet Techs need to be able to be realistic educated advocates in their communities.

Join us Friday, August 23rd at noon to hear Deborah S. Taylor, RD/LD, SNS present this informative webinar!

News from Your Board Members

President's Message
Abby Wood, RD, LD, CNSC

June 1st marked the start of a new year for the Oklahoma Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.  We have a great Executive Board and have begun planning for the upcoming year to support the Oklahoma Academy's mission to empower our members to be Oklahoma’s Food and Nutrition Leaders.

During our June board meeting we updated and revised our strategic plan which will help guide us through the year.  Here are some of the highlights from the meeting.  Mathea Ford, Communication Chair, will be rolling out our new OkAND Café Press store in the upcoming months, and we hope to enlist members to help with this task.  100% of the profits will fund student scholarships.  We will also continue our social media platform via Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, so if you are not following the Oklahoma Academy, we would love to have you join or “like” our pages.  Our OkAND Facebook page is a great way to hear about job opportunities, see event photos, and get member updates. Another highlight of our strategic plan is that we plan to continue offering free webinars to our members as a member benefit and an opportunity for free CEU’s.  Casey Campbell and Tiffany Grant are working diligently to bring you topics of interest.  Any requests for specific educational programs are always welcome.  A new and exciting opportunity this year is that a scholarship will be provided by OkAND for a member-at-large to attend the Public Policy Workshop in Washington D.C. that is being held March 30-April 1st, so be on the lookout for details in the upcoming months.

Plans are underway for the Fall Symposium which will be held Friday, September 27, 2013 at the Samis Education Center in Oklahoma City. The theme is “Fuel Up! Powering Health in Oklahoma” and the Fall Symposium committee, chaired by Jessica Shaw and Leah Hoffman, have worked hard to bring our members some outstanding speakers.  Juliana Smith, the Academy’s Director of Consumer Protection, will start out our day by talking about the steps we need to take as Oklahoma dietitians to strengthen our licensure act.  Other topics will range from working with minorities to motivational interviewing, and there will even be a workshop offered on electrolyte management by Dr Gary Dubois.  This will be a terrific opportunity for networking and continuing education so make plans to join us!

FNCE® is coming up October 19-22 in Houston, TX and we hope many OkAND members will be in attendance.  OkAND will host a member reception on Sunday, October 20th at Mojeaux's in Houston from 6:30-8:30, and we would love to see you there.  Also, if you are presenting at FNCE®, let us know because we would like to highlight you to our members.  Misti Levya, our state regulatory specialist, will be attending the Academy's first Consumer Protection and Licensure Summit in October just prior to FNCE® where she will receive training on important licensure topics impacting our profession and can report back any highlights in our upcoming November newsletter.  Also, our Oklahoma Delegate, Amanda Jones, will be attending the pre-FNCE® House of Delegates meeting where the hot topic will be “Nutrition Services Delivery and Payment: The Business of Every Academy Member”.

I challenge each of you to get involved with OkAND this year. Offer your talents and skills. Your leadership is needed, and there are so many opportunities to serve. Don’t forget that Spring Convention, chaired by Stephanie Fink, Teresa Jackson, and Jennifer Parham, is just around the corner and will be back in Tulsa this year.  This would be a great opportunity to get involved.  If you are interested in volunteering for one of our many committees please contact Heather Engelman at oknutrition@oknutrition.org.

I am looking forward to working with each of you, and I thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve you as the OkAND President 2013-2014.  If you have questions, concerns or ideas for OkAND, please do not hesitate to contact me at awood@jpmc.org.
