The Oklahoma Academy is on Facebook

In December 2011, the Oklahoma Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics launched a Facebook page to allow our members to have another outlet for recognition of the Registered Dietitians and Dietetic Technicians, Registered in the state of Oklahoma.  You can "like" our page at www.facebook.com/eatrightoklahoma and learn more about what's happening in our state with other dietetics professionals.

We post continuing education opportunities that are on our website so that they are in a place where more people are engaged.  We also post news as it comes in about our members, like when they are featured on the news and when they receive awards.  It's a great way to stay in touch with all that is happening in our state, and comment or give feedback about the latest news stories from around the globe.

Often, we post on "hot topics" that are relevant to dietetics professionals - like the latest research and news from the Academy.  We have also posted new insurance information and tips on how to become a provider, as well as news about what's happening in research and other key areas that can be relevant to your customers and patients.  We want you to become more engaged with us and our Facebook page, so please login and like us, and then start participating in the conversation.  Let us know what you would like to see featured on our page as we are developing our systems and determining how we will ultimately use social media.  We need you to be part of that!

News from Your Board Members

President's Message
Jennifer L. Parham, RD, LD

What better way to describe the efforts of the Oklahoma Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics than with Webster’s definition of teamwork:  “Cooperative effort by the members of a group or team to achieve a common goal.”    As active and engaged members of the Oklahoma Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics we continually strive to be recognized as the food and nutrition experts within our great state.  Working together we willingly embrace change with creativity and strategic thinking.  OkAND would not be the successful team it is today without each and every one of you, volunteering your time and talents to make our organization great, so thank you!

During the June board meeting the OkAND board worked diligently to update and revise the strategic plan.   With our strategic plan as a guide we will continue to work toward three common goals:

The public trusts and chooses registered dietitians as food and nutrition experts.
OkAND improves the health of Oklahomans
Members and prospective members view OkAND/AND as key to professional success.

While this may sound a bit overwhelming, we can easily achieve these goals with your help.  On behalf of OkAND I would encourage your participation in university, district and state wide nutrition activities and initiatives.  There are an abundance of areas for you to become involved and make a difference for our profession.  If you are interested in volunteer opportunities please contact me or the OkAND central office and we will gladly assist you.

Plans are also underway for Fall Symposium to be held Friday, Oct. 26th, 2012 at Mercy Health Center.  The theme is “Made in Oklahoma.”  This will be a terrific opportunity for networking and continuing education for new and seasoned members alike so make plans to join us!

OkAND is now “connected” so I would encourage you to “find” us and “like” us on Facebook for the latest news and events related to nutrition.  Stay abreast of current trends and topics of interest while connecting with other nutrition professionals across the state.  I am also pleased to announce that OkAND’s Facebook page will be featured during Neva Cochran’s  FNCE presentation in Philadelphia titled, ‘Social Media: New Ethical and Legal Paradigm’.  Session 164 will take place on Sunday, October 7th  and you won’t want to miss it …very exciting!

I am looking forward to working with each of you and I thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve you as OkAND President 2012-2013.  As Henry Ford, one of America’s industrialists and pioneers of the assembly line process once said, “Coming together is the beginning.  Keeping together is progress.  Working together is success.”  Together we will achieve and succeed!

Public Policy Updates
Misti Leyva, PhD, RD, LD

The Public Policy Committee’s first order of business is to welcome Sharon Huey as the new Public Policy Coordinator! She joins us after another whirlwind Spring.

On March 1st OkAND celebrated Legislative Day at the State Capitol. More than 50 RD’s attended to hear guest speaker Jari Askins. The former Lieutenant Governor discussed the role our members play in public policy and the importance of communication with our legislators. Afterwards members met with their state representatives and senators to discuss the importance of RD’s in healthcare.

The next month Cheryl Hull and Tara Conway convened in Washington D.C. the15-17th for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Public Policy Workshop. The theme was Influencing Up…Increasing Our Value.

After two days of training, Cheryl and Tara took to the Hill to discuss the issues important to the Academy.  The four federal issues of focus this year were:  The Reauthorization of the Older Americans Act, The Farm Bill, MNT Coverage for Medicare and Pre-diabetes and Resolving the Drug Shortage Issue.

Some of my take home messages were:
1. YOU are the expert in nutrition-You don’t have to be an expert on the bills!
2. Just showing up and making noise that Registered Dietitians and Dietetic Technicians Registered are resources to legislators and care about policy is often the best thing we can do!
3. It is all about who you know!

Although not everyone can attend PPW, there are some important steps you can take to support the Academy’s work in Washington DC. One of the most important is to answer the Action Alerts! When you receive these emails, don’t ignore them!

The agenda is set for another year and we have much to do.  To volunteer for activities, or if you need information, contact your Public Policy Committee members!
